Greenhouse Gas Emissions

On a worldwide basis, total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have risen substantially over the last 20 years. This trend is projected to continue as the world’s economy grows and fuel consumption increases. The process of generating electricity is the single largest source of GHG emissions in the United States,

Buckeye has committed to significantly reducing its contribution to the GHG emissions problem. That commitment includes implementing the Energy Independence Project.

As previously discussed, the project experienced a temporary setback in 2010 when the #4 turbine at our Perry, Florida site experienced a catastrophic stator failure. The turbine required two months downtime for repairs.

This substantially increased our purchased power during that time, and impacted the overall 2010 GHG emissions. However, we are confident the Energy Independence Project, when fully implemented, will allow us to achieve our GHG reduction goal within the original timeline.
